Nafretiri, Peacock Priestess

Archaeology, in it’s many forms, has long held a fascination for me. Imagine the excitement Howard Carter must have felt at his discovery of the treasures of King Tut’s Tomb! “. . . Everywhere, the glint of gold.”

Artifacts, Tomb of High Priestess NAFRETIRI, 18th Dynasty, Egypt is a step back in time to the 18th Dynasty during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut. NAFRETIRI, High Priestess of the Goddess Isis and in service to the Queen/Pharaoh lived, but only in my imagination. Her Headdress reflects the peacocks she fancied and the Sun she worshiped. The painting, a wall from her tomb and painted in the Ancient Egyptian style, shows her with the Goddess amid much classic Egyptian symbolism.

Artifacts was, for me, an exciting opportunity to explore old styles using new techniques and to study a fascinating culture. It was a thrilling adventure as I “met” and grew to know this mythical woman who lives in my mind. And, for a time, I could be Howard Carter on a dig in Egypt, finding the tomb of a young Pharaoh and the treasures it contained!
